Hematocrit (PCV) in cats, explained
Hematocrit is the share of the blood made up of red blood cells. Kidneys make a hormone (EPO) that tells the body to make red cells.
What a higher hematocrit (pcv) can mean
A higher hematocrit can come from dehydration.
What a lower hematocrit (pcv) can mean
A lower hematocrit means anemia, which is common in later CKD and can make cats tired and less hungry. There are treatments.
Why it matters in kidney disease
- Healthy kidneys make erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone that tells the bone marrow to make red blood cells. In CKD, less EPO can lead to anemia.
- Anemia can make cats tired, less hungry and colder. Pale gums are a reason to call your vet.
- Dehydration can hide anemia by concentrating the blood, so values are read alongside hydration.

What is a normal hematocrit (pcv) level for a cat?
A typical feline reference interval is about Example only: 30.3 – 52.3 %. Use the range printed on your cat’s report — it differs between labs., but every lab sets its own range. The range printed on your cat’s report is the one to use.
