Phosphorus in cats, explained
Phosphorus is a mineral from food. When kidneys filter less, it builds up in the blood — and high phosphorus is linked to faster CKD progression.
What a higher phosphorus can mean
A higher phosphorus usually means more phosphorus is coming in from food than the kidneys can clear. Lower-phosphorus diets and phosphate binders are common tools.
What a lower phosphorus can mean
A lower phosphorus often means diet changes or binders are working. Very low phosphorus is uncommon but worth mentioning to your vet.
Why it matters in kidney disease
- High blood phosphorus is linked with faster progression of CKD and with a hormone change (secondary hyperparathyroidism) that can make cats feel unwell.
- IRIS suggests different target ranges depending on stage. Diet is usually the first step, and phosphate binders mixed into food may be added.
- Phosphorus can rise before it shows up as “high” on the lab’s standard range, which is why IRIS targets are lower than many lab ranges.
IRIS reference targets
IRIS suggests keeping blood phosphorus within these ranges for cats with CKD. Your vet will choose the target that fits your cat.
| IRIS stage | Suggested target (mg/dL) | mmol/L |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | No specific target | — |
| Stage 2 | 2.5 – 4.5 | 0.8 – 1.5 |
| Stage 3 | 2.5 – 5 | 0.8 – 1.6 |
| Stage 4 | 2.5 – 6 | 0.8 – 1.9 |

Questions to ask your vet
Ask your vet
- Is my cat’s phosphorus within the IRIS target for their stage?
- Would a lower-phosphorus food or a phosphate binder help?

A typical feline reference interval is about Example only: 3.1 – 7.5 mg/dL. Use the range printed on your cat’s report — it differs between labs., but every lab sets its own range. The range printed on your cat’s report is the one to use.
